Sanibonani, I am Mpumelelo Zamokuhle Zulu, a dedicated social scientist, scholar-activist, and artist with a profound passion for gender, sexuality and violence in Southern Africa - often explored through decolonial, queer, feminist, health, psychological, and pleasure-centred paradigms. As an advocate for gender and sexually diverse people, I commit my work to challenging established norms and empowering communities through transformative research, activism and teaching.
My academic journey has grounded me in a rich, multidisciplinary foundation, equipping me to challenge traditional perspectives and bring critical insight to the diverse professional roles I embrace. Currently, I am pursuing an Interdisciplinary Master’s in Social Sciences at the University of Cape Town, where I intricately weave together my interests in Psychology and African Feminist Studies.
My research explores the intersections of human sexuality, identity construction, cultural dynamics, and violence, all viewed through a decolonial queer and African-centred psychological lens infused with Indigenous African cultural insights. I derive immense fulfilment from teaching and mentoring, a commitment demonstrated by my extensive experience lecturing undergraduates and supporting young minds in economically disadvantaged communities in Cape Town.
Beyond academia, I actively engage in the public sphere through podcasts, national television appearances, webinars, community dialogues, and academic publications, all serving as platforms to advocate for social change.
Zamo also writes poetry, paints, and tends to their garden as avenues of creative expression and queer world-making.
